AE Forums _ Team Associated Race News _ 2009 'The Dirt' Nitro Challenge Event Coverage

Posted by: Brent Thielke Feb 17 2009, 12:35 AM

Welcome to Team Associated's coverage of the 10th Annual 'The Dirt' Nitro Challenge. Just like the past two years, The Nitro Challenge is being hosted by The Nitro Pit in Wittmann, AZ.

Usually this event has its fair share of rain, however the forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures up in the 80's this week. Should be a recipe for a great event.

Racers from across the World will be in attendance vying to take down the double winner from last year’s event, Team Associated’s very own Ryan Cavalieri. Cavalieri and the rest of the Associated team have some new suspension geometry that they have been testing for the past few weeks. Initial reports have been successful and the team is looking to defend the title.

Joining Cavalieri will be Arizona native, Ryan Maifield. Ryan has seen much success in buggy since switching to the soon to be released Reedy 121 VR Engine. With multiple wins and podiums, look for Maifield to be ultra fast at the Nitro Pit. Not to be left out for Team Associated are BRCA Champion Neil Cragg, multi-time EFRA “A” Championship finalist Robert Batlle and reigning EFRA “B” Champion Lee Martin. These three drivers traveled to Las Vegas to get some prep time with Associated’s very own ”The King” Richard Saxton. Saxton is coming off a terrific ’08 with multiple “A” main finishes and is looking to put his Reedy Powered RC8 on the podium early in the year.

This event will also be the first time that the recently release Factory Team RC8T ventures to The Nitro Pit. Collectively, Maifield and Cavalieri have been dominant at this track in Truggy winning the Nitrocross, Nitro Challenge and the Truggy National Championship all at The Pit.

Stay tuned to http://www.associatedlive.com for more photos, features and video as the week progresses.

Good luck guys.

Well, we're on our way to the track from rainy California. In the almost 5 years I've lived Cali, the rain this morning was the heaviest I've ever seen. Let's hope the mountains by Palm Springs keeps this weather to the West and not across the desert to Wittmann, AZ.

We hope to arrive around 4pm to get the pit area setup, meet up with the rest of the team and get a quick look at the track. I'll have pictures and more information from the track later this evening...stay tuned.

So we’ve arrived to the track and all I can say is, “Where is my dirt bike?” The track is SICK! Give Joey a few days, a clean slate and a bobcat and he get’s insane! LOL

The layout better resembles an arenacross track as opposed to a 1/8th scale track. With no part of the track “untweaked” the Nitro Pit facility has been shaped in to arguably the most challenging combinations of jumps, turns, off cambers, step-ups and whoops ever seen at an r/c facility. It took me over 3 minutes to walk the track at a pretty fast pace with a few huffs and puffs to climb some of the steep jumps. Whoever walks away a champion over the weekend will have truly earned it as it will take a unique combination of driver, car and engine to properly navigate the layout.

Track Walk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLIQWTgLx0o

New in the pits was an updated JConcepts RC8 body, seen here on Ryan Maifield’s vehicle. You’ll also notice the blue anodized shock towers. These more closely resemble the yet to be released production towers out of Associated’s Area 51.

Not pictured are Revolver truggy tires out of the Proline camp. It’s my understanding that the first practice will be the debut run for the new rubber from Proline. I’ll be sure to get some pics of these for tomorrow’s updates.

So we’re a little past ¼ way thru the day and the program seems to be running a bit slow, but there are always racers on the track. With approximately 15 heats of truggy and 19 heats of buggy to run one full round of practice will take close to 6 hours. This puts the final round of practice ending around 10pm tonight under the lights.

As mentioned yesterday, Proline has a new Truggy tire, the Revolver. They also have a new molded foam and lightweight wheel.

Good luck guys. How is the track surface for the cars? Is it choppy at all or do they seem pretty smooth? Everything looks great. I was also impressed with that style of shock towers. Seems to make the car more sensative to adjustment from my short time testing with them.

P.S. Thanks to AE for never ever making something as ugly as the Losi Truggy body. That is the ugliest thing I have ever seen in all of my short time racing RC cars. That body shouldn't even be legal to run.

Quick update from round 1 of truggy with one heat to go:

1) Cavalieri - RC8T/Orion
2) Tebo - Kyosho/Orion
3) Tessmann - Hot Bodies/O.S.

I'll get the rest after the round is complete.

* Truhe blew-up something in his drive train on close run to Cavalieri's.
* Drake is somewhere in the top 5.
* Maifield is sitting 7th with three "on his own" crashes...lol.

Have you guys been pretty much running the same set ups you came up with at the warm up?

How did practice go with buggy yesterday with the new towers now that you are all running with everyone else?

Were the set ups pretty close in Buggy from the warm up also?

Thanks

How are the Brits getting on Brent???

Posted by: wivout Feb 20 2009, 10:17 PM

From Jon Dell (Lee Martins 8th Mechanic)

quick post as its late and i'm tired. right now Lee is asleep and snoring.... again. yesterdays practice was ok, loads of crashing on the jumps whilst trying to get the line, but both RC8 & T proved to be tough as boots with no problems. Today was truggy qualifying. Lee drove really well, but with little truggy experience found it tough to rag the car into the turns. He finished up 24th and in the B, one place behind Bloomers. Cragg is in the C, having had an issue in the last qually. Lee's happy with result and should be able to progress with a good start. Reedy engines are running great and have been made better over the week.

Buggy qually tomorrow. This should be much more to Lee and Neil's liking, so we are looking forward to being able to challenge for a direct A main place. Both cars ran great in practice and the new shock towers seem to put the shocks in the right place.

All in all we are having fun, but the days are long (7.30 to 10pm yesterday). Fingers crosses for the lads, every bit of luck helps.

Jon

...sorry for the lack of updates...my connection is terrible today...

Quick math has Tebo with the provisional TQ and Cavalieri second. I'd say that Tebo, Cavalieri, King and Maifield all have a great shot at the TQ for the event. Guess we'll find out in a few hours.

Posted by: Brent Thielke Feb 21 2009, 12:42 AM

Also, I just wanted to give everyone a few things about the fiasco with LiveRC.

Brandon shipped out the LiveRC equipment to arrive on Tuesday. According to my sources, the tracking number shows the last scan somewhere in Illinois on Tuesday. So bottom line, blame UPS for not "delivering on time". Brandon finally had enough and had Canyon Thompson go to Best Buy and buy new equipment. To me, they are doing everything possible to bring the race to their customers.

Unfortunately, circumstances beyond their control is messing with LiveRC's reputation. I commend Brandon for his efforts from 2000+ miles away.

Posted by: Mikey Hudson Feb 21 2009, 12:44 AM

Brent - you don't happen to have a 2.5 degree toe block do you? Haha

Posted by: wivout Feb 21 2009, 12:44 AM

Yeah second that one, Audio was working on LiveRC at Race 18 of Round Two.

Canyon Thompson is working on Video as i type this.

Great job as always from Brandon and Co.

Posted by: Shane Racer Feb 21 2009, 12:53 AM

Maifield would have smoked the tq for round two if he didn't get caught in traffic early.

I sure hope people understand that some times things happen that can't be helped. Live RC is the best thing that has happened for RC coverage.

TIMING IS UP AND AUDIO
ALL DOING STERLING JOB
R.M WAS ON FIRE IN HIS RUN
I RECKON TEBO HAS BIT A FEW NAILS EH LOL

Posted by: Brent Thielke Feb 21 2009, 12:57 AM

Here are a few observations from the second round of qualifying...

* Cavalieri was on a pace to be about 2 seconds behind TQ and was lapping a driver who litterly stopped on the straight. Cavalieri tumbled and ended up upside down. Tebo had to run across two lanes of traffic to marshall him and nearly lost a finger from oncoming traffic.

* Maifield was a second up on TQ with two laps to go and a guy crashed at the top of the hill, the marshall flipped the car over right in front of Maifield and he had to seriously check-up and wasn't able to do the step-down double coming on to the front straight.

* I overheard someone ask Truhe what tires he ran and his reply was, "Not the right ones...lol."

* The track is now completely hard packed. No black groove, but there is definitely a groove out there.

It is really interesting that Cav is running Kyosho wings instead of Pro-Line ones. These are the same ones I have been running. I have liked them so far. Nice and flat and pretty light weight.

Kudos to the AE Team, not only at this race, but also at Motorama. Brent just to let you know, Brandon and Chris represented AE very well. Not only by racing well, but also being approachable and helpful. After talking to Brandon about his set ups and strategy, i was able to shave off 25 seconds on my lap times. Brandon and Chris, thanks alot!!

If you watch the Neo-Buggy video of the last 10 minutes, watching the team's reaction afterwards is really neat. Too bad Maifield dissed Thielke on the high-five though! laugh.gif

Us short guys can't get up the BT's level for a high-five. LOL

Now that I am somewhat recovered from last weekend, I would like to thank everyone under the Associated tent at the nitro challenge for their hospitality. I had a great time hanging out with all the drivers and their pit guys. Congrats to Guff for his win in the 40+ division, Tanner Denny for his open truck win and performance in the open buggy main, Ryan Cavalieri for his pro truck win and buggy podium and Ryan Maifield for his pro buggy win and great run in the truck main. All in all it was an outstanding weekend for Team Assocaited. I would also like to thank Jon Faulkner from JConceps for helping out with tires for the event. See you all in Vegas.
